So now we either throw ourselves into the task of straightening up or feel guilty if we don’t. Perhaps our modern admiration of the super-neat took root in the unrealistically sanitised homes of the faux families in early sitcoms and advertisements, just when the post-war boom era was enabling many people to accumulate ever more stuff. That suggests we have little innate drive towards neatness. There is little evidence that anyone without servants or similar help put a lot of effort into or worried much about tidiness before the 1950s. But why are so many of us obsessed by the idea of tidiness? Research sheds little light on the question because virtually all studies of neatness and organisation start by defining mess as dysfunctional. Our social-media sharing exacerbates that demand. That helps us explore the world and make sure we're representing it, and make sure that the things that Mexicans would want the world to see, we're putting in the game.Īs well as that, though, as I touched on, there's this really broad and beautiful culture of Mexico. From the very start, on our research trips we were working with locals who were from Mexico, who were actually photographers, but they really knew their local areas, they knew the sights, they knew the things that were the most beautiful things in their region of Mexico, and they were able to act as something of a tour guide for us and help us to explore and find all these amazing things. The answer is - we're a UK developer, a predominantly British team, and so we need to work with people from Mexico. Mike Brown: It's a great question, and I think there's an answer that will touch on a few different areas of Mexican culture. But when you're tackling a culture like Mexico's, how do you get that balance right? On that point - a part of the spirit of Forza Horizon is providing recognisable virtual tourism to people, right? But you also want to avoid falling into stereotypes - which is easy enough to do when you're portraying the UK, you live here. Watch on YouTube The Forza Horizon 5 reveal trailer. I think we ended up in a place where there just couldn't have been a more exciting option for the Horizon festival. Then you add on top of this incredible, diverse open world the fact that Mexico has this culture that's known and loved all over the world: the art, the music, the people. And all that comes together to create an open world that is just so much fun to explore - every area you go into, you're seeing new things, experiencing new things. So, therefore, it has to be diverse as well.Īnd Mexico as a country - it's almost like the whole world in one country, because you have volcanoes, snowy mountains, canyons, jungles, rolling hills, ancient cities, like really modern beachfront hotels, various different flavors of desert. And then it doesn't take that long from thinking about that objective until you realise that there's not any point being bigger if it's more of the same. Right from the beginning we had an objective that we wanted Horizon 5 to be the biggest Horizon yet. ![]() Mike Brown: So, whenever we're starting a new Horizon game, the location is the decision we start thinking about first, and it's the one that we always spend the longest thinking about. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to talk to creative director Mike Brown - who presented the E3 demo - about the game, and Playground's hopes for it. Moving the action from Playground's home turf of Britain to the deserts, cities and rainforests of Mexico, Horizon 5 looks set to be another technically refined and thoughtfully put-together diversion from the master craftsmen at Playground. This is where Forza Horizon 5 enters the scene. Watch on YouTube The full Forza Horizon 5 E3 2021 gameplay demo. It was more successful in some areas than others the game is constantly rewarding to dip into, but (as with many previous Forza Horizons) it has struggled to make its rather chaotic online multiplayer offering as sticky as its solo challenges. While still emphasising beautiful and optimistic open-world driving fun and esoteric car collection, 4 brought a cautious but deliberate shift in emphasis towards 'live' gaming, with its constant updates and its living map populated by default with other players. It was to be expected that Horizon 4 might break the rhythm. It was a given that this enormously polished and entertaining open-word driving series by Playground Games would return, but we didn't know when for its first four entries it had been on a strict biennial schedule, but the UK-set Forza Horizon 4 has now been entertaining people for almost three years with little sign of flagging, thanks to a well-judged and assiduously maintained weekly and monthly update schedule, as well as easy accessibility on Game Pass on both Xbox and PC. ![]() Perhaps not one of the biggest, but one of the most pleasant surprises of E3 2021 was the unveiling of Forza Horizon 5 in a relatively substantial gameplay demo during the Xbox showcase - with a November 2021 release date to boot. ![]() Combo skills - Certain characters learn these. Maybe these agencies aren’t as indispensable as President Joe Biden says they are. Maybe we’ve all learned a valuable lesson here. Has this disrupted your life in any material way? Not mine. Raise your hand if you’ve even noticed that federal workers are not showing up at the Department of Energy or Education or Transportation or the State Department or the Consumer Product Safety Commission. All of this is an outrageous abuse of taxpayer money, but there is a silver lining here. So, the rest of America in private sector jobs is back to work, but not the 1.9 million federal employees, who often make $100,000 a year in salaries and benefits. Who are the Democrats accountable to? Federal employees, or their own taxpayer voters and constituents who pay these workers’ salaries? This vote makes the answer to that question crystal clear. Is there any wonder why? Well, more than 90% of PAC donations from federal employee unions go to … you got it, Democrats. Guess what? All but six House Democrats voted no. That bill passed the House on a 221-206 vote. 31, 2019, with expanded remote work only for authorized projects. Now, new House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is pushing a bill that would require all federal agencies to reinstitute their telework policies as they existed on Dec. What’s so special and privileged about government workers? The COVID scare ended two and a half years ago, and most private businesses have demanded their employees show up for work at least some of the time - or find a new employer. The Federal Times news outlet reports that at the end of 2022, only about 1 in 3 federal bureaucrats were on the job in the office. ![]() ![]() But in the public sector, the percentage of remote workers remains much higher than that. Only a little more than half of private sector workers are actually in the office these days - although, with each passing day, private workers are returning to work sites. To be fair, just because an employee is working remotely doesn’t mean they aren’t working. Many hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been getting a full-time paycheck from Uncle Sam (meaning from all of us) without showing up for work for three years now. This is one of the greatest federal government scandals of all time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Without a nonce, the encryption can be broken using a chosen-plaintext attack. Wireframes are meant to show the basic structure of an app so that the interaction model can be defined before spending time creating hi-fidelity mockups.Īxure gets the win here because it has pre-packaged components for wireframing immediately after installing the software. Depending on the UX process, they can also be viewed by developers and other stakeholders. Lo-fidelity deliverables are usually produced as wireframes or digital sketches that can be distributed and reviewed by other designers and product owners. Other whiteboard collaboration tools may be better suited for concept ideation than Figma, such as Mural and Realtimeboard, but for a design tool, Figma is better than Sketch and Axure by a mile. Additionally, Figma doesn’t require non-designers to own a copy they open the file link and start working. A click on representative avatars in the toolbar switches views to that person’s perspective, making it easy to share an idea quickly. Sketch and Axure both offer cloud sharing services, but there is no way to share screens in real time with collaborators.įiles shared in Figma can be joined in real time, and every participant’s labeled cursor is displayed. Tools that foster collaboration and are easy to use are best for this task. Concept generation is a team sport and includes non-designers like product owner/managers and front-end developers. However, ideation is also done digitally, especially in distributed offices. Many designers do concept ideation on a whiteboard or paper. For example, a team may undergo a concept ideation session to create a set of MVP features for a new app-or next-generation features in an existing app. The goal is creating new ideas to use in a product after considering the base requirements and any work that’s already under construction. Ideation is a creative process for generating new ideas, and it’s usually done by interdisciplinary groups consisting of designers, developers, product owners, and project managers. If that determination seems too close to call, third-party support is the tie-breaker. Note: When the tools have nearly identical features needed to complete a task, the win will go to the tool that is easier to use and provides faster delivery. We’ll score each tool based on how well it performs everyday design tasks out of the box- without plugins, add-ons, or third-party apps.

The next morning, sure enough, I had a call right away to report to the production office. He did that every night, reviewing the day’s work. I knew that Leon would give the tape to Stanley, and that he would be looking at it late that night. This is working.” I only stopped when the camera ran out of tape. After a couple of minutes, I noticed Leon had stopped focusing on the recruits and was pointing the camera at me. I had people with their pants down at their knees, people sucking their thumbs, people doing pushups. With Leon on the video camera, taping the candidates for Stanley’s benefit, I started working down the row. “Smokey” hat I picked up from our wardrobe department, and since I wore Marine Corps dungarees and a duty belt every day, I looked the part. “Forget what I will be saying about your mothers and fathers.” I explained to the recruits when I lined them up in platoon formation that I was going to come at them like a true Drill Instructor. Stanley had to approve every last detail of the picture, including still-shots of the prospective extras and our videotapes. We were about to start selecting and videotaping candidates to be background extras in the film. Leon and I were getting along so well that I thought I could ask him for a favor. To me, he seemed more like a son to Stanley than an assistant. I had been working closely on the film with Stanley’s Number One Assistant, Leon Vitali, who had been in Stanley’s movie Barry Lyndon. The Marine Corps had not taught me to roll over and play dead. The Marine Corps had not taught me to establish a beachhead and then give it up. Now in England to work on the movie, I did not allow Stanley’s rejection of me auditioning for the Gunnery Sergeant Hartman role to last very long. About a week and a half later, I got the call: “Lee, we would like you to join the film as Technical Advisor. I had joined the film company only a short time before, but I fully expected my bid to audition to be met with success. We were in his office on the set of Full Metal Jacket at Pinewood Studios outside London. Stanley Kubrick had hired me to come to England to act as Technical Advisor on the film, and that was it.
